Chapter Nine

With Christmas only two weeks away, Gary found himself caught up in the excitement of the Otto household. Clara’s kitchen smelled of Christmas baking, and Eli talked about going to cut a tree.

“Tradition,” Eli declared. “The world thrives on tradition. Even in Germany, before I found God, my mama always baked Christmas pastries, and my papa would cut a tree. Mama believed, Papa didn’t, but we all loved the traditions of Christmas.”

Gary pondered the words. Traditions. He knew little of such things as traditions. All he knew was that every year his ma would make a new pair of mittens for him to ward off the cold of winter. He hadn’t heard about Christmas until Estella and Jorge introduced him to the festivities in Mexico. Of course, their celebrations could in no way compare to the preparations in the Otto household.

As usual, on Friday night, Gary enjoyed the comfort of the warm parlor, his thoughts encompassing many matters other than traditions. Tomorrow he would go into town, get the mail, and maybe do some shopping.

He occupied his usual chair next to the fireplace, his stocking clad feet resting on a tapestry footstool. Eli sat across from him, in the matching chair. It took little time for the room to become filled with the smell of Eli’s pipe and the sound of Clara’s voice as she read from the Bible. Gary wished he could always call this home. He couldn’t help but feel he didn’t deserve to be here and soon it would all end. He’d learned a long time ago, never to get his hopes up, never expect good things to last forever.

Clara finished her reading, and Eli turned his attention to the evening prayer. Gary stretched broadly. It had been a long day and the idea of bed sounded like a good one.

“Are you going to town in the morning?” Clara said.

Gary looked up. “Are you talkin’ to me?” He pointed his finger at his chest. Clara nodded her head.

“I’m planning on it. Why?”

“Would you take me with you?”

Gary looked into her eyes. “Are you sure?”

Since the night of the dance, their conversations came easier. He had not been alone with her, nor had he taken her to town. Protecting her good name seemed more important to him than having the pleasure of her company.

Clara laughed. He loved to hear her laugh. “Of course I’m certain. I have some shopping to finish and I need more flour and sugar for baking.”

“More baking?” His hands moving to his expanding midsection. “You have enough baked goods here for an army.”

“Not really. During the holidays, there are always friends dropping by. Of course, I do love to take special treats to the older folks who can’t get out easily.”

“You could take the carriage,” Eli suggested.

“It’s all right with me, but don’t you want to go, Eli?” Gary said.

“I promised John I’d go with him to cut Christmas trees tomorrow. We need one for the church, one for the McPhearsons, one for here, and then there is old Mr.
